Day 9

This morning Raya was with me when I unpacked the FTT.  With the FTT in right hand, I put a small handful of kibble in my left hand and sat in the wing chair.  Presented the FTT in hand.  Raya bumped my leg.  Reward.  X8.  End of session

Day 8 - MILESTONE MOMENT

4AM
Session 1
This morning, the moment Raya finished her breakfast and I let her out to toilet, I removed the FFT from the plastic bags and placed it into the POCKET of my pj bottoms.  I had barely gotten it in position when Raya returned and came trotting back into the FR.  She immediately returned to me (normal behavior) but her nose was loudly sniffing.  She placed her nose right on the FTT and began Bumping.  I gave the cue word AS she was Bumping.  HUGE MILESTONE for the behavior!

I walked around the corner in the kitchen and got the cheese.  Raya waited while I opened it (it takes me a while to open the string cheese packaging) and then we had a cheese party!

Session 2 (Repeat Controlled Setup)
After the party, I returned around the corner to the FR once again, and once again she alerted to the FFT in my pocket and the routine repeated.  Even tho this second opportunity was a definite set up, I believe these training sessions only solidify the behavior.

630AM
Session 3
Another opportunity.  Altho Raya almost always stays by my side, this morning as I went for coffee she opted to stay on the bed in her nest of pillows.  So when I arrived downstairs I got the FTT and put it in my pocket.  THEN she jumped off the bed and came downstairs.  I wondered at the time if she smelled the odor.

By the time she arrived downstairs, I was pretending to look in the basket of the walker and then sauntered into the FR.  She didn't seem to pick up the odor quite as quickly as the last time, but did catch it and came to my side and held her nose on the FTT in my pocket.  So I verbally cheered her on and I cued Bump 3X before she began to excitedly Bump.  Followed by a cheese party.

Session 4 (Repeat Controlled Setup)
Followed with a "repeat controlled set up".

TRAINER NOTES: This was a MILESTON because it was the first time that Raya entered a room "cold", having had no clue that we would be working with the odor.  And secondly, it told ME "cold" that the sample is still viable on Day 8.

I am going to begin to re-teach the Bump in public.  Alone and by itself.  It can be followed at Dog 15 (Phase 3) https://alertbehavior15.blogspot.com

COMMENTS:  Oh my goodness! That is fabulous!!! And I ALWAYS have a repeat controlled ‘set up’ after the initial alert. It is reinforcing and part of the routine
Also : opening string cheese IS a pain. I always grumble about the packaging. They could easily make it easier to open

Day 7

Session 1
Same as yesterday.  FTT on my right side.  Raya watched me open and set up FTT.  I carried it to the kitchen so she didn't SEE me place it in my waistband, but everything was the same as Day 6.  As soon as I walked out of the kitchen you could hear and watch her nose working. My leg.  My hip.  BUMP.  I was sauntering.

Session 2
Same as Session 1.  I was seated in the wing chair.  Both sessions ended in a cheese party.

Session 3
This session was trickier.  I set up the Find Game.  With a tennis ball.  I hid it in the LR.  When she was searching the LR, I placed the FTT in my waistband and then sat in a chair in the hall beside the dining room.  She caught the odor and left the LR and began sniffing and searching the DR.  As she rounded the DR table and was within 4-5' of me, she caught the odor, came closer, sniffing, came over to me and BUMP!  Another cheese party.

Day 6

2 consecutive sessions after a SAP break for 2 days.

Session 1
I opened the 2 plastic bags containing the FTT w/odor in the kitchen and placed the FTT in the waistband of my pants.  Covered by a t-shirt.  I did a few things in the kitchen for perhaps 30 seconds and then sauntered into the family room.  Raya immediately walked over to me as I was moving, sniffing  loudly and then Bumped me several times. I returned to the kitchen with Raya and had a cheese party!

Session 2
I remained in the kitchen and ate a piece of pizza.  Raya was in the family room.  Again, I sauntered into the FR and sat down in the wing chair.  She came over to me, sniffing and immediately Bumped.
We returned to the kitchen for another cheese party.

Session 3
I remained in the kitchen another minute or so and then strolled into the FR for a third time BUT this time, no FTT on my person.  Raya followed along but did not sniff and did not Bump.

No video.  Video screams "WE ARE TRAINING" and I couldn't get it set up without her seeing it.

Session 4
For session 4 I had Raya on Place.  She did not see me get the sample, but she did hear me open the plastic bags.  Once again I placed the FTT in my waistband.  Once again, sauntered across the FR, through the open door and stopped about 6' from the door.  Raya followed, stopping at the open door and waiting for cue to come out.  As soon as she crossed the threshold, she began sniffing and Bumped my leg.  This was the first time I had chained the behavior out of doors.  This happened about an hour and a half after sessions 1-3.  Raya had eaten her dinner in the interim.  We went together to the kitchen for a cheese party.  SO, we have transitioned from rewarding at the source to having a delayed reward.

TRAINER NOTES:
Since refreshing the scent sample on July 9, it has been double bagged and stored on the shelf across from the kitchen.  Prior to July 9 I had been storing the double bagged sample on the kitchen counter.  More or less light?  I don't know.  More or fewer counter odors?  Probably.  QUESTION: How long will this sample remain viable being stored in the new location?
