Day 8 - MILESTONE MOMENT

4AM
Session 1
This morning, the moment Raya finished her breakfast and I let her out to toilet, I removed the FFT from the plastic bags and placed it into the POCKET of my pj bottoms.  I had barely gotten it in position when Raya returned and came trotting back into the FR.  She immediately returned to me (normal behavior) but her nose was loudly sniffing.  She placed her nose right on the FTT and began Bumping.  I gave the cue word AS she was Bumping.  HUGE MILESTONE for the behavior!

I walked around the corner in the kitchen and got the cheese.  Raya waited while I opened it (it takes me a while to open the string cheese packaging) and then we had a cheese party!

Session 2 (Repeat Controlled Setup)
After the party, I returned around the corner to the FR once again, and once again she alerted to the FFT in my pocket and the routine repeated.  Even tho this second opportunity was a definite set up, I believe these training sessions only solidify the behavior.

Session 3
Another opportunity.  Altho Raya almost always stays by my side, this morning as I went for coffee she opted to stay on the bed in her nest of pillows.  So when I arrived downstairs I got the FTT and put it in my pocket.  THEN she jumped off the bed and came downstairs.  I wondered at the time if she smelled the odor.

By the time she arrived downstairs, I was pretending to look in the basket of the walker and then sauntered into the FR.  She didn't seem to pick up the odor quite as quickly as the last time, but did catch it and came to my side and held her nose on the FTT in my pocket.  So I verbally cheered her on and I cued Bump 3X before she began to excitedly Bump.  Followed by a cheese party.

Session 4 (Repeat Controlled Setup)
Followed with a "repeat controlled set up".

TRAINER NOTES: This was a MILESTON because it was the first time that Raya entered a room "cold", having had no clue that we would be working with the odor.  And secondly, it told ME "cold" that the sample is still viable on Day 8.

I am going to begin to re-teach the Bump in public.  Alone and by itself.  It can be followed at Dog 15 (Phase 3) https://alertbehavior15.blogspot.com

COMMENTS:  Oh my goodness! That is fabulous!!! And I ALWAYS have a repeat controlled ‘set up’ after the initial alert. It is reinforcing and part of the routine
Also : opening string cheese IS a pain. I always grumble about the packaging. They could easily make it easier to open
