Taking the Chain OTR ***

Today I put the FTT into a separate outer pocket of my bag.  Separate and apart, brought a bait bag w/kibble and cheerios and a string of cheese.  OF COURSE, Raya could smell the party.

We went to the Navy Exchange.  My plan was to train the behavior chain anywhere there was a chair to sit in.  We began in the Garden Center.  Proceded to the Shoe Department.  And then to the Beauty/Barber Shop.  Minimal human distractions but certainly distractions.  OTOH, Raya frequents the Exchange often.

***TRAINER NOTES:

If sample has been in L pocket and found and then I change to the R pocket.  And she stays at L pocket but alerts, is that a successful alert onto residual odor?  Or is it better to do as I am doing here and wait for her to find the FTT and alert there?

RT: I would wait for her to move past residual odor and onto the “hot” odor

This is a necessary part of the learning curve for alerts for T1: the bedsheets, the laundry basket of dirty clothes, the sofa cushions, clothing. . . There is residual odor everywhere- but we aren’t interested in alerts on the laundry basket from when a kid was sweating thru a low and then changed . . . 

Although:

In a true alert for a seizure or T1 event, a dog doesn’t actually have to find an odor on a pinpoint location on our body . . . 

But they DO have to push past and ignore old residual odors on a regular basis
