Testing the viability of the hydrated sample Day 6 . I took the refrigerated TT from the refrigerator. No visible signs of contamination. Placed Raya on a Sit Stay in the FR and hid the TT.
#1. Hidden in pocket of my cotton jacket hanging on the hall tree.
#2. Hidden in toilet paper roll in powder room.
#3. Held in my hand at my side while seated on the 4th step.
#4. Held in my hand at my side while seated on the first DR table chair.
#5. Held in my hand at my side while reclining on the LR sofa.
Hides 1 and 2: My intention for these hides was to test viability of odor.
Hides 3 thru 5: My intention for these hides was to teach Raya to look for odor on me AND to alert.
COMMENTS: Raya is used to the hides being in the LR. This morning she literally stopped in her run to the LR when she caught the odor as she was running PAST the hide at the hall tree. 1. She caught the odor (viable at Day ) 2. It slowed her down. 3. The odor placed closer to her starting point broke her "search pattern". That showed me odor viability.
I'm continuing to make the hide when on my body easier. The point of the lesson is to begin to expect to find it on ME.

FTT
While cleaning the kitchen this evening, I slipped the FTT into my jeans pocket. In the course of tidying up, I strolled into the FR, picking up items, etc. No response from Raya at all. I sat down in the training chair. No response. I returned to the kitchen and put the FTT away. Odor fail.
FILM CANNISTER
Next, I slipped the baggie containing the NTT and film canister containers out of the refrigerator. I placed the film canister into my jeans pocket and moved to the FR. Raya immediately picked up the odor and came to my left side. She seems to think that targeting on the item is part of the alert. She sniffed, stayed by my left leg looking at me. When I stopped moving, she targeted on my leg and then alerted.
Then I sat down in the training chair. She immediately targeted and alerted. I then moved the FC to my right pocket in full view. She moved to the right pocket, targeted and alerted. C/T. Repeat. C/T. I must remember that I am still TRAINING this skill. Letting her watch me move and place the target is part of the training process.
I was nibbling on a cookie during this session.
NTT
Returned to the kitchen. Exchanged the FC for the NTT. R pocket. Sat on arm of sofa. Immediate sniff, target, alert. Moved container to L pocket. Same positive result. Assuming that sample is viable.
Repeated having a cookie in my hand. No treats on body. We returned to kitchen for kibble to reward.
Went back to kitchen and removed NTT from pocket and returned to refrigerator. Placed original FTT in L pocket. Went to FR to training chair and sat down. Raya went immediately to L pocket. Sniffed/ targeted/ alerted. This is the same scenario as the first trial where she did not locate the FTT. C/T.
QUESTION: Why? Why does she detect and alert now but did not when first presented? Is the FTT sample viable or not? Must blind test.
I returned to FR and repeated strolling, sitting in training chair and edge of sofa. Sniffing but NO targeting or alerting attempted on residual odor.

TRAINER NOTES: Must remember that in addition to teaching Raya the behavior chain, we are also always "testing" odor viability. Have not worked with clothing sample before so never know how long the odor will remain viable. Have not ever created 2nd generation sample from clothing before. Have no history as to how long 2nd generation sample will remain viable. Or if it will become contaminated in refrigerator.
NOTE: Age when used
VIABILITY TEST: FTT
9/20/19
315AM
Put Raya on Wait in FR. Hid FTT in LR bookcase. Released to Find It. Raya trotted into the LR, sniffing. Went straight to bookcase and targeted on location of FTT (it was hidden behind stacked Paw Paws). :05
